SNORKELLING

Snorkelling in Zanzibar is an experience of a lifetime. The many varieties of coral around the island provide a home to thousands of colourful and exotic creatures, including blue ribbon tail rays, fire fish and clown fish.

DISCOVER MNEMBA ISLAND

Take a dhow to Mnemba Island, fishing as we go. Then swim amongst the fish and other sea life (we provide fins and snorkel!) . And finally, head back to the hotel under the power of the dhow sail (winds permitting!). Trip starts around 9.00am and lasts for 5 to 6 hours.

HERE IS HOW IT WORKS

There is no charge for snorkeling from The Zanzibari but you will need to bring your own equipment. Talk to one of our managers about the best times and places to see fish and anything else you should be aware of, such as tides, currents and general weather conditions.

HANDY TIPS AND SAFETY

Ask us for the best times to go snorkelling in the Indian Ocean - depending on your experience level there are a number of different things you can do. Ideally you should wear a rash vest as well if you're going out for longer than an hour - the water reflects and magnifies the sun so you will be getting twice the dose! Please be aware that all snorkelling is at your own risk.

STAY SAFE

Don't go snorkelling by yourself. Always let someone know that you're going snorkelling, and give an estimated time that you'll be back.

GEAR

Know your gear and check all your equipment is working before heading out.

KNOW YOURSELF

If you're having any doubts about your ability, don't go without talking to one of our managers first. Be honest with yourself about your fitness level.

PLAN AHEAD

Always plan ahead for coming back to shore - remember that you have to swim back the same distance you've gone out and you may have to battle against winds and tides

OUTSIDE CONDITIONS

Use sun cream and hydrate yourself before heading out - the sea is warm and you will be sweating without noticing.

SCUBA DIVING

Due to it’s popular location in Menmba Island the fish are used to divers, which allows you to get very close and appreciate their beauty. We and Fun Divers Zanzibar offer divers between 20% – 30% off when booking a Scuba Package.

MARINE LIFE

The nearby Mnemba Atoll is one of the best diving spots In Zanzibar and world renowned. With warm waters averaging 27°C (80°F) and good visibility, the waters around the island are awash with colourful marine life.

SUNSET CRUISE

Whether you’re on honeymoon, with your family or by yourself, going on a sunset cruise is the perfect way to wind down the day. You’ll be driven from The Zanzibari to a beach nearby where a traditional Dhow boat will be waiting for you.

GET ON BOARD!

The sail will be hoisted and you will silently carve your way through the calm seas of the Indian ocean. The route will take you round the tip of the island of Zanzibar and along the north coast. You will also be able to snorkel for 15-20 minutes while the sun prepares it masterpiece.

STONE TOWN TOUR

Stone Town is an UNESCO heritage site. During the tour you will witness a wide variety of sights, smells and sounds. The City Tour takes 2 – 3 hrs, and is also a good opportunity to hone your haggling skills when picking out souvenirs from the brightly coloured and adorned shops.

LOST IN HISTORY

Steeped in history, Stone Town in Zanzibar was once the biggest business center of East Africa. In it’s earlier days it was the hub for trading ivory, spices and slaves.

INFLUENCES

Power has changed hands numerous times over the years; the Portuguese, Arabs, Sultans of Oman and English have all had their influence on this unique and fascinating town which has created an incredible mix of architecture and culture.

SPICE TOUR

Zanzibar is famed for being the spice island due to it’s history of growing and exporting spices to the four corners of the world. The tastes, smells and uses for the spices will surprise you; some are used for treating wounds while others add an extra kick to any meal. We recommend combining this tour with a visit to Stone Town.

JOZANI FOREST

Famed for its rare Red Colobus Monkeys (Piliocolobus kirkii), Jozani Forest is a unique destination that should be on everyones to do list when visiting Zanzibar.

ENDEMIC VEGETATION

You will discover when you arrive in Zanzibar that the predominant type of plants are palms, shrubs and the occasional flame tree (as you would expect from a tropical paradise!), but Jozani forest steps away from the norm with it’s towering trees, unique plants and wildlife.

UNIQUE FORMATION

It is a stroke of luck that Jozani Forest has come to flourish and owes its existence to a small trough in the coral bed which lies between the mangrove bays of Uzi and Chwaka. A high water table and seasonal flooding provides the forest with the water and nutrients it needs to survive in the harsh conditions of a coral island.

HOW IT WORKS

We can arrange transfers to and from Jozani Forest, prices are charged on a per car basis and will vary depending on the pick up and drop off point (up to 6 people per car). Upon arrival you can decide to either stroll through Jozani Forest by yourself or be given a tour by one of the guides.

VILLAGE VISIT

A twenty minute stroll from The Zanzibari along the beach will land you in the small fishing village of Nungwi. Here you will also find the natural aquarium (home to sea turtles), a boat building yard and the fish market. You can either go by yourself or with a guide who will give you a wealth of local knowledge.

NUNGWI FISH MARKET

Early morning the fish market is in full swing – depending on the catch of the previous night you might see Tuna, King Fish, Dorado and a variety of other large fish for sale. Local fishermen (and women) wade out to the edge of the coral reef to catch a number of different small sea creatures. Their catch will be sold at the fish market throughout the day.

NUNGWI AQUARIUM

The natural aquarium in Nungwi is home to resident sea turtles and a variety of fish. The aquarium itself is a natural formation carved out from the coral bedrock by the erosion of millions of waves crashing against the shore. The depth of the water rises and falls with the tides providing a natural environment for its inhabitants.

NUNGWI BOAT BUILDING

While watching the white sails of the Dhows navigating the Indian Ocean you might wonder how these impressive boats are made. The Nungwi Boat Yard is a riveting (if you’ll pardon the pun) experience where you’ll meet the ship yard owner and learn how the ships come together; from the sourcing of the wood to the joints used and how they are launched.
